Why I love Camellia Oil

If you've used any of my products before, you've probably noticed that I use a lot of camellia oil.

So why do I love it so much?

Simply put, it's one of the most beautiful oils I've ever worked with. It's lightweight, absorbs beautifully into the skin and leaves your skin feeling soft and nourished without feeling greasy.

A Long History of Use

Camellia oil has been used throughout East Asia for centuries and remains a popular beauty ingredient today.

Many people know camellias as the beautiful flowering plants found in gardens, but the camellia family is actually much larger than most people realise. It includes thousands of varieties, including Camellia sinensis, the plant used to make green tea, black tea and oolong tea.

The variety most commonly used for oil production is Camellia oleifera, which produces seeds rich in beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants.

Historically, camellia oil was used by Japanese women, including Geishas, to condition and add shine to their hair, and it continues to be widely used throughout Asia in both skincare and hair care products.

What Makes Camellia Oil So Special?

One of the reasons I love camellia oil is its fatty acid profile.

Camellia oil is naturally rich in oleic acid, a nourishing monounsaturated fatty acid that helps soften and condition the skin. It also contains naturally occurring antioxidants, including vitamin E and polyphenols.

For me, the biggest benefit is how versatile it is.

Unlike some heavier oils, camellia oil absorbs quickly and leaves the skin feeling hydrated without feeling oily or sticky.

It's suitable for use on the face, body and hair, making it one of the most versatile oils in my collection.

Why I Use It In Skindiy Products

When I started creating my own skincare, I was looking for ingredients that were simple, effective and pleasant to use.

Camellia oil ticked all the boxes.

It's lightweight enough for daily facial use, nourishing enough for dry skin and gentle enough for many people with sensitive skin.

That's why you'll find organic cold-pressed camellia oil in several of my products.

Natural Skin Balm

My best-selling Natural Skin Balm contains a high percentage of organic camellia oil combined with a small amount of beeswax to help lock in moisture and support the skin barrier.

It's a simple formula made with ingredients I know and trust.

Blue Tansy Balm

My Blue Tansy Balm also features camellia oil as a key ingredient alongside blue tansy, helichrysum and other carefully selected botanical oils.

The result is a balm that feels rich and nourishing while still absorbing beautifully into the skin.

Rise & Shine Face & Body Oil

If you want to experience camellia oil in its purest form, my Rise & Shine Face & Body Oil contains a high percentage of organic cold-pressed camellia oil blended with beautiful botanical oils.

I personally love using it as:

  • A lightweight daily facial oil
  • A nourishing body oil
  • A hair oil for dry ends
  • An oil cleanser

Is Camellia Oil Suitable For Acne-Prone Skin?

Everyone's skin is different, but camellia oil is generally considered a lightweight oil with a relatively low likelihood of clogging pores compared with some heavier oils.

As with any skincare ingredient, it's always a good idea to patch test first and see how your skin responds.

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of beautiful oils available for skincare, but if I could only choose one, camellia oil would be right near the top of my list.

It's simple, versatile, lightweight and has a long history of traditional use.

Most importantly, it's an ingredient that I genuinely love using myself, which is why it has become such an important part of the Skindiy range.
